Dorette Pollard
Based in Toronto, Dorette Pollard began painting by listening to her inner voice while studying at Sciences Po, Paris, in 1993. Following a health scare in 2003, she switched from black and white oils to water mixable oils. Although she continued to paint, she did not pursue formal training as an artist. Upon retirement as Legal Counsel, Department of Justice Canada, Ottawa, she created Dorette Pollard Art in 2023 and introduced colour into her palette.
Using geometric compositions, her paintings explore how colours interact with each other, especially when influenced by the contrast between black and white. Pollard has developed a parallel series in her practice called LOP Art, in which she uses the leftover paints from the grids to create free flowing abstract works of art. Together, these two bodies of work invite viewers to slow down and consider the subtle ways colour shapes emotions and perception in both art and life. Pollard has exhibited in six juried group exhibitions.
