Durga Sutharsan
Durga is a Markham-based abstract artist and the founder of Spec of Blue. A sixth-generation artist, they have developed a practice defined by tactile complexity and an unwavering exploration of the human spirit.Specializing in heavy-textured abstract work, Durga utilizes a refined palette of acrylics, modeling paste, and 24kt gold leaf. By integrating unconventional media—such as wool string and coffee grinds—into their layering process, they create a visual topography that mirrors the grit and grace of emotional resilience. Their work is a deliberate investigation into the discipline required to endure heartbreak, failure, and disappointment, ultimately offering a sanctuary of hope for the viewer. Through a minimalist, "quiet luxury" aesthetic, Durga translates the invisible weight of perseverance into elevated, contemplative objects, inviting audiences to find beauty in the strength it takes to simply move forward.
