John S Goulet

Photography

In 1970, my mother gave me an Asahi Pentax SP Spotmatic II. From that morning forward, I saw the world differently. My first subject was our cat. Then I began composing. A man's eye, torn from a magazine and set askew in the socket of a bleached deer skull. My little sister, legs folded beneath her, watching television in soft focus. For fifty years, I have flown as a pilot into some of the most remote corners of the world, including the South Pacific, the Niger Delta, the Orinoco, the Masai Mara, the Amazon, and the Nile. I think of myself less as a photographer than as a storyteller. I capture moments and bring them home so I can keep the story alive.I’ve not pursued photography commercially, but my work has appeared in Condé Nast Traveler (Maldives), National Geographic Your Shot (Croatia), Forbes Travel (Bali), Die Zeit (Germany), Aman Resorts (Indonesia), Six Senses (Maldives), Grid Magazine (Philippines), Rotor&Wing (Nigeria) and Canadian Aviation (Fiji), among others.

What Your Support Makes Possible
At 14, I received my first serious camera - an Asahi Pentax SP Spotmatic II with TTL. From that moment on, I saw the world differently. My first subjects were our family cat and dog, and my little sister, all shot in soft, surreal light that saturated the brilliant colours of Kodachrome 64. Since then, as a bush pilot, I have travelled to some of the world’s most remote corners, including Australia, Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Madagascar, Venezuela, Brazil, Algeria, Egypt, Thailand, the Philippines, the Maldives, Greenland, Iceland, and most of Europe. I’ve not pursued photography commercially, but my work has appeared in Condé Nast Traveler (Maldives), National Geographic Your Shot (Croatia), Forbes Travel (Bali), Die Zeit (Germany), Aman Resorts (Indonesia), Six Senses (Maldives), Grid Magazine (Philippines), Rotor&Wing (Nigeria), and Canadian Aviation (Fiji), among others. What I bring to you is not a portfolio of destinations. It is a fifty-six-year habit of looking and waiting for the perfect moment when lighting, colours, people, and places align. Your financial support allows me to continue sharing these moments with a wider audience.
