Virginia Gail Smith
In a time when many of us are seeking deeper meaning in our surroundings, my work offers a quiet invitation to bring nature home. Through textures, colours, and forms inspired by the Canadian landscape, each piece helps us rediscover the beauty in the everyday. My sustainability studies have redefined how I make and think about art making, bringing art out of grandeur into a more tender, elusive, thoughtful, idealistic space. I play with materials that have a first life story, subtle but present, and more ephemeral materials with shorter histories but often more complex. My artworks become a quiet archive of ecological cycles — growth, decay, dispersal — reminding us that sustainability begins with noticing, honouring, and working with what the land already provides.
